HAMMERS
Night Sea Journey

site-sensitive spatial sonic poem
Fredrikstad Mekaniske Verksted
Fredrikstad, Norway
Autumn 2017
HAMMERS is a site-sensitive spatial sonic poem. "Hammers" was inspired by the old welding methods used at Fredrikstad mechanical shipyard. The installation is a goodbye poem for a space that influenced the city for many generations and planned to be demolished for real estate development. It was part of Night Sea Journey at FMV, celebrating Fredrikstad's 450th anniversary with a walkthrough of industrial ruins transformed into a mythological landscape with world-class circus artists, live music, and art installations.
The spatial sonic poem is meant to evoke memories from the old FMV area.
This sound installation consists of live elements from the space itself and hammers triggered by people passing to recreating the imagined soundscape, which used to echo through Fredrikstad.
