Head to Head V. 0.02 Is an intervention took place at Deichmanske bibliotek Tøyen. Live with two hidden performers inside the library and an ultrasonic/parametric speaker to engage with the audience in the form of indirect communication, challenging the strategies of public space and the private space which accrue within the library when an individual takes a chair within the public space (the library). I aim to blur/obscure this border and co-create with the audience a meeting space.
The intervention took place over three days in the library, a hidden ultrasonic speaker facing an inviting chair. When a person sits in the chair, he or she will first hear a soundscape of the library. The participant will experience an increase in the volume of the pre-recorded sound from the actual space; this soundscape aims to blur the boundary between the actual space and the fictional space. The participant will be asked a series of question with instructions to answer through a series of simple body-gestures such as nodding the head, raising one hand. The two hidden performers will play on the possibility for further interaction with other participants. This example of the scenario:
-The border between private and public in many spaces is under a big question mark. Would you let me blur these borders in this physical space during the next ten minutes? If yes, scratch your head with your left hand. If no, please leave the chair
-Under the chair is post-it note. Please write an idea or a topic or a question on the post-it note which interests you today – that your thinking about today.
-If you want to share this with a stranger, pin the note to the back of the chair.
-Would you like to meet up with a stranger to talk about this topic of yours? If yes pin another paper with time and place where this can happen. It can be a virtual space or a physical space
-you saw some other notes on the back of the chair, feel free to take one of these notes with you if you want to meet a stranger and talk about the topic of their interest.
-we would ask you for a consent to publish this conversation please raise your right hand if you agree and kindly leave the chair for another stranger, have a good day.
As more people participate, they activate the structure, and give more choices of topics, and places for other strangers, the structure here explores scenography agency, as an organiser/re-organiser, what one sense in relation to the existing space, in other words, it is not what a scenographer does to spaces that counts most, but what scenographer can facilitate to happen. Therefore, the main aim is to create the potential where something unknown can happen. The work aims to position the audience as co-creators of the work by establishing this kind of dialogue. The creation will only start to exist once it meets an audience, and the audience decides to interact with other audience and co-create the outcome.
